The background screening industry uses lots of acronyms and abbreviations that may be unfamiliar to those not in the business. To better help you understand some of these terms, Backgrounds Online has compiled a short list of acronyms with brief explanations of each:
FCRA - Fair Credit Reporting Act
The federal law that regulates the background screening industry. To be used for employment purposes, a background screening company must be FCRA compliant.
FTC - Federal Trade Commission
The government agency that enforces the FCRA and promotes consumer protection.
CFPB - Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
The government agency that enforces federal consumer financial protection laws.
EEOC - Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
The government agency that enforces federal laws related to employment discrimination.
GLBA - Gramm-Leach-Bailey Act
Also known as the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, this federal law regulates how financial institutions handle consumer information.
NAPBS - National Association of Professional Background Screeners
An association that promotes ethical business practices and legal compliance within the background screening industry. This association offers accreditation to Consumer Reporting Agencies who meet or exceed their exacting standards.
BSCC - Background Screening Credentialing Council The governing body for the NAPBS's accreditation program.
BSAAP - Background Screening Agency Accreditation Program The accreditation program offered by the NAPBS and governed by the BSCC.
CRA - Consumer Reporting Agency
Backgrounds Online is a Consumer Reporting Agency; we collect information on consumers and provide reports for employment purposes.
BGC/BGS - Background Check/Background Screening Though there are many different ways to say it, these acronyms refer to the background report itself or the act of background screening.
CBC - Criminal Background Check Often considered one of the most important types of background checks, a criminal background check is typically the most common.
