A few years ago, an accreditation process known as the Background Screening Agency Accreditation Program (BSAAP) was established to measure best practice and compliance among Consumer Reporting Agencies (CRAs). This badge is a tool used by the awarded companies to assure they're performing at a level that doesn't just meet industry standards, but exceeds them. It's also serves as recognition of best practice to help gauge potential vendors when an end user is deciding which of the many background screening firms best suits their needs. The BSAAP was created by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) Background Screening Credentialing Council (BSCC).
In their own words, the NAPBS is a not-for-profit trade association that represents the interests of more than 700 companies around the world that offer tenant, employment and background screening. They are an organization dedicated to promoting ethical business practices and legal compliance within the professional background screening industry, and as such, the NAPBS sets their standards exceptionally high.
The BSCC is the governing body for the BSAAP which has become a widely recognized seal of approval among employment background screening-affiliated organizations.
You might be asking, "What does this mean for me and my company?" The short answer, is that you've chosen wisely when selecting your background screening partner. Our internal procedures meet the expectations for best practices set forth by industry and compliance professionals, and therefore, you're in good hands during your onboarding process.
To become accredited, Consumer Reporting Agencies (CRAs) must meet or exceed BSAAP standards in several critical areas and pass a rigorous on-site audit, conducted by an unbiased independent auditing firm. The primary focus of the audit is to shine a bright light on the following procedures and practices of a CRA:
Consumer Protection - keeping sensitive information safe and secure.
Legal Compliance - ensuring compliance with all applicable laws.
Client Education - detailing client responsibilities.
Product Standards - vetting researchers and auditing procedures.
Verification Standards - performing verifications properly.
General Business Practices - involving credentialing, certifications, and training.
