Hiring Has Slowed Down Nationwide

August 26, 2025

An article in the Society For Human Resources Management said fewer jobs are being created than expected for 2025.

Fewer Organizations Are Hiring

According to the Society For Human Resources Management (SHRM), unemployment is up, and hiring is down. An article they published explained that economists expected more jobs would be created in recent months than what they’ve seen. Initially, 144,000 new jobs were anticipated for May, but the actual number was closer to 19,000. Expectations for June were around 147,000 jobs, but the reality was closer to 14,000.

Data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) demonstrate that the job market is lower than it has been in several years, other than during the pandemic. Statistics do show, however, that the healthcare industry is seeing an uptick in employment. Reportedly, 55,000 healthcare jobs were created in July 2025 alone.

Downward Trend In 2025

Additional BLS data showed various industries, including manufacturing, business services and government agencies, have each lost more than 100,000 jobs in recent times. This could be causing difficulties for individuals who are looking for employment in many markets.

The SHRM article also mentioned long-term unemployment is on the rise. The average number of weeks that Americans are unable to find jobs is said to be at 24.1. Further, the article noted the number of people who are currently unemployed has risen to 1.82 million.

Many Employers Are Still Hiring

While the news may be concerning, there were some positive observations. Employers in various industries are currently hiring, and wages are said to be up by around 3.9%. The job market could be getting a little more competitive as a result.

Job advertisements for a few industries are said to be up this year. Beyond healthcare, increases were noticed for executive management, retail and hospitality positions. Some experts are said to believe there could be a surge in hiring which begins in September and continues through the holiday season.

Background Screenings

Throughout the country, organizations that are hiring continue to rely on comprehensive background checks. These reports show organizations if a candidate has:
  • Criminal records which could indicate the person poses an undue risk to the company, other staff or the public.
  • The desired employment history.
  • Any required licenses or credentials.
  • The necessary educational background.
  • Information that is mandatory for certain positions, like Motor Vehicle Record Searches for individuals who will drive as part of their employment.

Because of the crucial data points background checks can provide, they can also help employers avoid claims of negligent hiring. Running these reports shows an organization is taking steps to create a safe environment and avoid bringing on people who might not be qualified or eligible for certain positions.
