Penn State University established a new process for running
background checks on anyone who might work for them.
Background Checks Are Required
As of April 2026, Penn University is requiring all
applicants to pass a background check before they can be hired. The screening
package will consist of a Social Security Number Search and various criminal
searches such as:
A Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background
Check
A Pennsylvania Child Abuse History
Clearance
A Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Background
Check
These requirements will apply to all positions, including
Full and Part Time, student employees, volunteers and contractors.
The Process
As part of their screening policy, Penn University will
screen everyone who might be allowed to represent them. This process will begin
after an individual receives a conditional job offer. These reports will
typically take three to five business days to complete.
Only when someone is found to have a clear report will they
be deemed eligible for hire. When that occurs, those individuals will be able
to start the onboarding process.
Screening Policies Matter
The reason Penn University, and most employers, require
comprehensive background checks is to
help ensure they don’t bring on someone who has a violent or otherwise serious
criminal record that might indicate they pose an undue risk to the
organization, its representatives or the people they serve. While many
convictions do not warrant an adverse action, it's important for employers to
look for records that are relevant to the position being sought as part of the
due diligence process.
Background checks can provide a wealth of information that
help hiring managers identify strong candidates who can help the organization
succeed. These reports may include employment and education verifications that
show if an applicant has the training and experience that is required for a
position. They can also confirm whether a candidate has the proper licenses,
credentials or anything else necessary to meet eligibility requirements.
Choosing A Background Check Provider
When looking for a Consumer Reporting Agency (CRA) that
will run employment background checks on your behalf, a key consideration is
whether an agency is
accredited by the Professional Background
Screening Association (PBSA). Before they can become accredited, CRAs
must undergo a thorough audit from a third-party and prove that they follow
reasonable procedures to only provide current, reportable records.
There are various federal, state, and local laws that
create mandates for the screening process. By working with an accredited CRA,
you get peace of mind which comes from knowing your new partner will make
efforts to provide reliable data that can help you make informed decisions.
