The EEOC Released A Tool For Exploring Data Trends

February 2, 2021

EEOC Explore allows visitors to search employment data patterns. It is intended to help prevent discrimination.

EEOC Explore

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) launched a search tool that provides current and comprehensive employment data. It has information for more than 56 million employees and 73,000 employers.

Per Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, employers are required to submit reports about their workforce. The EEOC’s tool empowers visitors to find this publicly available data quickly and easily. Results are said to be current and granular. One important goal for this tool is to help prevent discrimination against employees based on protected factors such as gender and ethnicity.

Press Release Announcement

News of this tool was announced via a Press Release. It noted that EEOC Explore visualizes aggregated data in intuitive and efficient ways. The tool was developed in collaboration with the NORC at the University of Chicago.

EEOC Chair Janet Dhillon spoke about EEOC Explore. She said: “In support of our mission to prevent and remedy unlawful employment discrimination, the EEOC has made significant progress over the past two years to develop a 21st century data and analytics program office within the agency to provide greater and improved services to the public. As part of this effort, the EEOC Explore tool will make it easier to navigate the agency’s aggregate EEO-1 data for everyone interested in advancing equal opportunity for all in the workplace.”

The EEOC’s Chief Data Officer Dr. Chris Haffer also commented: “The new mapping tool makes tracking employment trends as simple as a few clicks, particularly for those analyzing job patterns for minorities and women in private industry. Through its convenient filters, users now have access to privacy protected aggregate data at multiple layers of geography and can download the data for their own analyses.”

Using The EEOC Tool

According to their website, EEOC Explore provides a national aggregation of data from private employers. The EEOC remains committed to protecting confidential information. It will not include any individually identifying data points.

The tool offers categories such as Year, Geographic Region, Job Category and NAICS Code. It allows for comparisons by state and annual trends.
